RBT® CERTIFICATION GUIDE

The 3 Steps to RBT® Certification

And how we prepare you to walk into each step with confidence.

Is This The Right Path For Me?

That's the impact of this work. Every dayRegistered Behavior Technicians (RBTs®) help people gain independence, help families find hope, and create moments that once felt impossible.

If you're looking for a career that changes lives, including your own, you've found it.

This is a strong fit if you...

  • Lead with compassion and genuinely care about the people in front of you
  • Find meaning in every step forward, big or small and have the grit to keep showing up
  • Communicate openly, listen well, and aren't afraid to ask questions
  • Adapt easily and stay calm when things don't go as planned
  • Hold yourself to a high standard and take pride in doing the right thing
  • See a challenge and look for a solution instead of a reason to stop
  • Want your work to matter to someone long after the session ends
BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Prerequisites

To become an RBT®, you must meet three minimum requirements set by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB),  the national organization that regulates behavior analysis and sets the professional standards for RBT® certification.

AGE

18 Years or older

EDUCATION

High School diploma or GED

BACKGROUND CHECK

Pass a Level 2 fingerprint-based background check

No college degree required. The RBT® is one of the few clinical certifications accessible regardless of educational background. Full requirements at bacb.com.

STEP ONE

Complete Your 40-Hour RBT® Training

Available through the RBT® Academy at AppleTree Connection
WHAT THIS STEPS INVOLVES

The 40-hour training covers the RBT® Task List (3rd Edition),  the skills and knowledge the BACB requires you to demonstrate. Core topics are how to measure behavior, teaching new skills, reducing problem behaviors, keeping records, and professional behavior.

You can train from anywhere
. The RBT® certification is national. Your training provider doesn't have to be local, you have options.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Based on the RBT® Task List, 3rd Edition

  Real practice scenarios

A real person to answer your questions

Prepares you for the competency assessment

Timeline: Minimum 5 days · Most people take 1–6 weeks depending on schedule

STEP TWO

Pass Your Competency Assessment

Mock Competency Available through the RBT® Academy at AppleTree Connection
WHAT THIS STEPS INVOLVES

You must complete a Competency Assessment with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). During this assessment, your BCBA supervisor will observe you demonstrating specific skills from the RBT® Task List.

First through role play, and then with actual clients. Think of it less like a multiple choice test and more like an evaluation where someone watches you do the job.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

A BCBA who explains what they've been observing

Mock Competency practice before the real assessment

Clear expectations of what each task looks like in practice

  Employer Connections Included

What most people don't realize is you can't self-administer this assessment. You need a BCBA to sign off. Your Competency Assessment must be submitted before you can schedule the Board Exam

STEP THREE

Pass the RBT® Board Exam

Mock Exam and Support Available through the RBT® Academy at AppleTree Connection
WHAT THIS STEPS INVOLVES

An 85-question, multiple-choice exam administered by Pearson VUE. You have 90 minutes. It's based on the RBT® Task List 3rd Edition, the same content framework as your 40-hour training. You must schedule and sit for the exam within 90 days of your Competency Assessment submission.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Section-by-section review of the Task List

Practice questions that mirror the real exam

  Timed, full-length practice exams

  Includes ethics & professional conduct

What most people don't realize is the exam tests your ability to apply concepts, not just define them. Plan for at least 1–2 weeks of focused study time before your test date.

Timeline:
Schedule 2–4 weeks after Competency Assessment · 90-day window to test

AFTER CERTIFICATION

What Comes Next

YOU'RE OFFICIAL

You'll receive your certificate from the BACB and can begin applying for RBT® positions. The certification is nationally recognized. Your options are not limited to one location or employer.

RBT® STATUS

Your RBT® status is placed on inactive immediately after passing the board exam. You're certified, but to start working, you need a supervising BCBA to bring you on and activate your status. That step is what bridges your certification to your first day on the job.

ONGOING SUPERVISION

An RBT must be supervised by a BCBA for at least 5% of the total hours they spend working directly with clients each month. The support doesn't stop once you're certified.

RENEWAL EVERY 2 YEARS

To keep your certification active, complete 12 hours of Professional Development Units (PDUs), planned learning activities that keep your skills sharp and knowledge current.
